I suppose you could substitute buttermilk for regular milk.

Sure thing. Here's the recipe I've been using for the past 50 years or so. Easy as pie -
Buttermilk Cornbread -
2 cups cornmeal (preferably white)
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons oil (bacon drippings are traditional but use whatever)
2 eggs
1 cup buttermilk
Mix the dry ingredients together. Add the wet ingredients and stir thoroughly. Pour into a 9 or 10 inch cast iron skillet that you have greased well and preheated at 425F. Quickly spread the batter out to the edges of the pan, then bake 20-25 minutes until pulled away from the sides of the pan and golden brown. Cut into wedges to serve.
Ingredients
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup yellow cornmeal
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 large egg
Directions
1Preheat oven to 450掳F.
2Heat oil in an 8'; cast iron skillet or muffin pans for 5 minutes.
3Combine cornmeal and next 4 ingredients in a medium bowl; make a well in the center of the mixture.
4Stir together buttermilk and egg; add to dry ingredients, stirring just until moistened.
5Pour into the hot skillet.
6Bake at for 20 minutes or until golden.

Just sub equal parts butter milk for the milk. If you have nice and thick butter milk then you may need to add a little more to get the right consistency. I thinkk you may also need to adjust the baking powder and soda, but I'm not sure.
